Are your gutters on your Memphis, TN home in need of repair? If so, you may want to consider replacing them with new seamless gutters.
Your gutters are one of the most important parts of your home’s exterior. They catch water from the roof and direct it away from the foundation. If your gutters are old or damaged, they may not be able to do their job properly, which could lead to water damage inside your home.
If you’re wondering when it’s time for new gutters in Memphis TN, here are some signs that you should call a professional:
The Gutters Are Damaged
If you notice that your gutters are rusted or leaking, it’s time to replace them. Old or damaged gutters can lead to problems like water damage and mold growth inside your home.
You Have A New Roof Or Outdated Gutters
If you recently had your roof replaced or if you’re building a new home and want seamless gutters for aesthetic purposes, now is the perfect time to install new ones!
Seamless Gutter Installation
Seamless gutters are made from one piece of material that doesn’t have joints where water can collect. As the name implies, seamless gutters are mostly free of seams. A seam is anywhere two sections meet. The reason seamless gutters are the best is because less seams equals less opportunities for leaks.
Seamless gutters are formed on site and made to the exact length of run necessary to cover a side or section of your home. For example, if you have a 42’ side of your home, we can make an exact 42’ section of gutter out of one piece of aluminum. This means that the only seams will be where the ends meet together, or the gutters change angle.
The alternative style of gutters that we still see in the Memphis area are pre-formed or pre-made gutters. These are gutter sections that you can usually buy in big box stores that come in 8-10’ lengths. That means that the 42’ example we talked about earlier will have over 5 seams on that same run. All these seams will cause unnecessary low spots and potential points of restriction where debris can build up. This will inevitably lead to leaks.
Aluminum or Steel Gutters?
The most common gutter materials you’ll find on a home are aluminum and steel. Knowing the difference between aluminum and steel gutters will help you determine which is best for your home.
Aluminum gutters
In recent years, aluminum gutters have become more popular than steel gutters on homes. Aluminum is a lightweight but strong metal.
Aluminum does have a tendency to expand and contract depending on how hot or cold it is outside, so aluminum gutters may need maintenance over time on corners where different gutter sections join.
Aluminum also comes in a wide variety of pre-finished colors, so you can ideally get a pre-finished gutter that has a baked-on finish that will last 20-40 years (depending on the manufacturer). A lot of our customers really like the pre-finished colors because they plan on not painting them. If you prefer to paint them, just make sure you use a good quality paint that will adhere to aluminum properly. Your paint store should be able to point you in the right direction.
The best benefit to aluminum gutters is that they will not rust. Aluminum inherently is rust-free. That’s why you see a lot of auto manufacturers switching to aluminum construction (that and the weight savings). This means that you should be able to get the most life out of your aluminum gutters if you keep them cleaned out and maintained well.
Steel Gutters
Steel gutters have been around for a long time, and they are still very popular in commercial construction.
Steel is pound-for-pound a stronger metal than aluminum, so they can technically withstand more abuse from falling debris and excess weight. Steel can be painted and there are some manufacturers that have pre-finished colors, much like aluminum.
That being said, the main issue with steel is that it rusts. We see steel gutters all the time with holes on the bottom of them. Steel can start rusting relatively quickly and, if the gutters aren’t maintained, you can start to see major rust damage within 5-years.
For this reason, we primarily install aluminum gutters at Restoration Roofing. We also recommend a high-quality gutter guard on any gutter system so that you will get the longest life possible out of your investment.
